Evelin Cabrera, 20, who has no known address, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for her role in the death of Daniel Pineda-Romero in December 2022, when he was found unresponsive in his family's home in Gaithersburg.
According to prosecutors, on Dec. 10, 2022, a family member found Pineda-Romero unresponsive, and first responders declared him dead at the scene.
"(His brother) saw him sleeping at 3 p.m. (on the day he was found), and just prior to calling 911, he went to wake him and felt him cold to the touch," court documents state.
Toxicology results determined that the 19-year-old's death was from fentanyl intoxication.
Investigators say that cell phone records show text messages and an Instagram exchange between Cabrera and Pineda-Romero coordinating a meet in Silver Spring to purchase pills hours before his death.
Cabrera was sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but four years to serve, followed by five years of supervised probation upon her release.
Following the announcement of her sentence, Pineda-Romero's mother described her son as "an amazing son that unfortunately took the wrong path to obtain painkillers," she said. "He trusted the wrong person which led to his death. He was an amazing brother, son, and friend."
